Mexico regrets denial of emergency motions to enjoin effect of Alabama HB 56

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico has expressed regret at the ruling issued by the US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, which denied the requests for a temporary injunction pending appeal of several provisions of Alabama HB 56 that were filed by civil society organizations and the United States government.

These motions sought to block the entry into force of certain clauses that could potentially have negative effects on the immigrant community in that state, pending the resolution of an appeal in a higher court.

The government of Mexico will continue to follow closely the implementation of HB 56 and to provide prompt legal assistance to any Mexican citizen who may require it.

In addition, it will follow the appeals process that is before the 11th District Federal Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia.
