SAN PEDRO, Belize — The tourist island of San Pedro in Belize is buzzing with activity for a Central American Integration System (SICA) conference, which is being attended by the presidents of six Central American countries and the prime minister of Belize, Dean Barrow.

The conference opened on Thursday evening with Barrow delivering welcoming remarks to the presidents and foreign affairs ministers of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama.

A wide range of matters are scheduled for discussion.

Security is tight, with more than 100 security personnel detailed to provide security for the three-day conference.

Belize is the current chair of SICA and is often referred to as the gateway between Central America and the Caribbean since it is a member of both SICA and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
