HAMILTON, Bermuda — Bermuda now has a woman as premier.

Paula Cox

Finance minister Paula Cox won Thursday night’s run off to replace the outgoing premier, Dr Ewart Brown. She won the leadership battle against two rivals in a landslide victory on the second day of the Progressive Labour Party’s three-day annual conference.

CANA News reported that Cox polled 124 votes to Terry Lister’s 39 and Dale Butler’s 2.

Works and engineering minister Derrick Burgess edged out Lister to become deputy premier.

Cox was sworn in on Friday as the third female premier of the British territory.

The outgoing premier, who was also tourism and transport minister, served four years as head of government, but has been a member of parliament since 1993.
