BELMOPAN, Belize — The president of the Belize Court of Appeal, Justice Elliot Mottley, has tendered his resignation effective 31 December 2010.

His letter of resignation was sent to Governor General Sir Colville Young last week.

The Barbadian-born Mottley has had a brilliant legal career spanning nearly five decades during which he practiced law in several Caribbean islands. He also sits on the Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands.

He was appointed a Court of Appeal judge in Belize in 1999, and in May 2004 he was promoted as president of the court.

A special sitting of the court will be convened on Wednesday to pay tribute to Mottley for his outstanding work in Belize during the past 11 years.
