Seven reasons why gaming is great for your relationship

Gaming was often associated with social misfits – pariahs – who were incapable of interacting with their peers in a ‘normal’ way. However, that stereotype has been dispelled some time ago. The widespread growth in gaming since the 1990s has shifted expectations and paradigms by creating a new normal.

The nerds of yesteryear are the tech geeks of Silicon Valley, and they are thriving in a world run by the Internet of things. Traditional models have been upended and the male-dominated gaming scene has slowly given way to a ‘gender-neutral’ world where women are just as active as men.

Millennials are no strangers to the online gaming scene, and many of them actively seek out gamers as friends and partners. Popular dating sites routinely list games as one of the ‘Must Match’ preferences. Among the most popular games are World of Warcraft, Halo, Call of Duty, social games like Poker and Blackjack, et al. Not too long ago, gaming was a deal-breaker in relationships – not so today.

1) Gaming is a great way to spend quality time together as a couple

Believe it or not, everyone in a relationship should have separate interests – that’s healthy. But when one of your interests is gaming, that is like the Gorilla Glue that binds you together. Couples who play together stay together. Online players live by a specific code, and that is sacrosanct. There is an unspoken set of rules, conduct and courtesy that runs through the gaming community. This is great for couples since it encourages mutual respect.

2) Gaming is enjoyable and that’s like soul food to couples

Shared activities and good times together keep couples happy. Contrary to popular opinion, gaming is one of the most exciting, immersive and rewarding activities that couples can do together. It’s less about individual pursuits than it is about joint objectives. These are indeed the building blocks of successful relationships. A myriad of exciting games is available, including Candy Crush, World of Warcraft and even Gears of War. Whatever your preference – as a couple – you are sure to derive maximum benefit from playing together.

3) It’s affordable stay-at-home entertainment and that’s great

Gaming doesn’t require players to get dressed to the nines, rent a limo and spend a ton of money for an evening of fun. Once you’ve got your gaming gear – which is minimal for games like poker and free to play MMORPG games, you’re golden. It makes for the perfect evening of entertainment, and it’s a great way to begin the mornings too. Couples can make gaming a weekly pastime and build the relationship in the process.

4) Your partner’s interests are important too

What better way to show care, consideration and compromise than participating in your partner’s gaming sessions. Relationship unity is all about flexibility and acceptance of those things that are important to our significant other. Sometimes, we may just enjoy the games our partner’s play – what a win!

5) You’ll get to know her friends much better

Nowadays, women are just as likely as men to be serious gaming aficionados. The top female players have hordes of followers, and this is a great way to meet friends and family. From this perspective, gaming is a fabulous way to get introduced to new people, make some friends, and have a blast.

6) It’s edge of your seat entertainment

Gaming is one of the most exciting forms of entertainment. It is interactive to the max, with multimedia-rich features and audio-visual prowess. Top online games will certainly get your adrenaline flowing, and that bodes well for the excitement and celebration to follow. Besides, the high levels of competition are great for building stronger bonds.

7) You get to see what your partner is all about

They say you only know someone when you truly know someone. Truth be told, you’ll get to know somebody well when you’re gaming with them. That way you get see things like how much they are willing to sacrifice to get you out of a spot of bother. Will they leave the relative safety of the fortress to venture out into the wilderness to help you? Are they willing to boost your stack so that you can get back in the game? If manners maketh a man, gaming is what separates the boys from the men.
