Phase II of Exercise Tradewinds 2017 set to begin in Trinidad
Published on June 10, 2017 Email To Friend    Print Version

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- Phase II of the international military exercise entitled Exercise Tradewinds 2017 will be conducted in Trinidad from June 13 – 17, 2017. Phase I is being held in Barbados from June 6 – 12, 2017.

Tradewinds is a multi-national maritime security and disaster response exercise in the Caribbean. Participants from 20 partner nations will join in the exercise, including Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as military personnel from the United States, Canada, France, Mexico, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The exercise will be restricted to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force bases and camps in the Chaguaramas Peninsula. During the manoeuvres, persons in the vicinity of these military sites may hear the sound of blank gunfire and witness occasional flares as part of controlled operations. Citizens, residents, tenants and visitors to the area should not be alarmed as this would be part of ongoing exercises and controls are in place to ensure that there is no risk to persons or property.

Tradewinds is a joint, combined exercise led by the Unites States Southern Command. It is conducted in conjunction with partner nations to enhance the collective abilities of defence forces and constabularies to counter transnational organized crime and terrorism. Exercise Tradewinds also provides for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
