PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands -- The Peoples Progressive Party or PPP is the name of a potential new political party in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) and former owner of Sky King Airlines Harold Charles is the name behind its formation.
Charles, a Haitian born belonger, sold out the routes of his former business Sky King Airlines to Lyndon Gardiner, the nephew of now disgraced former premier Michael Misick.
Sources have provided two different reasons for the Sky King sale. Some say the airline was in financial trouble and others say it was pressure applied by the Misick-led government.
Charles is now reported to be networking with Edward Smith PhD to ready this new party in time for the November 9 election. Initially Charles and Smith were both rumoured to run as independent candidates. When questioned on their slate of 15 candidates, it appears they have yet to be posted. When questioned, the interim government has indicated that there in adequate time for the new party to get on the ballots.
The party will have to nominate and campaign five at large candidates as well as field ten district candidates to be considered a serious entity. Fewer than 70 days remain until the election.
If the PPP goes forward it is unclear how many votes they will siphon from the other parties.
The British electoral advisers have been behind the creation of the “at large” candidates to encourage cross-party voting.
I am on board. A diversion from business as usual in politics in the Turks & Caicos Islands is welcomed.
If the PPP can run this country like their leader ran his company, we are poised for sustainable economic growth, jobs, jobs and more jobs, better education system, scholarships, better labor laws, better health care system, care for the elderly, better water systems, family island development, road improvements etc.
The PPP seems to be visionary and I welcome this breath of fresh air. The two other parties have not proven to me, based on thier past track record, that they can take the TCI to where we ought to be.
I will give the PPP, Mr. Charles, Mr. Smith and whoever else runs under the leadership of the PPP my full support.
