Mexico to host sixth ACS summit
Published on March 29, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, will address the opening ceremony of the sixth summit of heads of states and/or government of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), which takes place in Mérida, Mexico from April 30, 2014.

Also listed to deliver remarks are ACS Secretary General Alfonso Múnera and Mexican Nobel Prize winner, Mario Molina.

One of the highlights of the summit is a presentation of the “New Initiatives for the Benefit of the Caribbean” offered by the government of Mexico and dialogue on that presentation. Also down for discussion is an evaluation of the plan of action of Pétion-Ville, which came out of the last summit in Haiti.

Prior to the actual convening of the summit, there will be two other meetings, the first being the preparatory meeting of the seventh extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Association, on Monday, April 28, during which the agenda and other procedural matters will be approved.

The day will also include two work sessions the first dealing with the draft declaration of Merida, while the second would discuss the draft evaluation of the plan of action of Pétion Ville. Participants in both sessions would include representatives of member states, associate members and founding observers.

On Tuesday April 29, the seventh extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Council of the ACS will be convened. The session will close with remarks from the chairman of the Ministerial Council, Fernando Carrera, minister of foreign affairs of Guatemala. Also at both these meetings Munera will deliver remarks.
