Letter: Insulin: Cuba vs. US
Published on July 7, 2017 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

With reference to the letter published in your issue of July 1 from Dr Nestor Garcia Iturbe regarding a comparison between Cuba and the United States where insulin treatment for diabetes is concerned, he states that, whereas in Cuba it costs only cents per month because the government subsidises the cost, in the US it costs the patient hundreds of dollars a month.

He goes on to ask what happens to those who cannot afford such a high cost, and if leaving them to die is not a denial of human rights.

According to the American Diabetes Association:

Patient Assistance Programs

Most pharmaceutical companies offer financial assistance programs to persons who have trouble affording their medications and supplies.

Each program has specific criteria that must be satisfied in order for an individual to be considered eligible for a financial assistance program.

In addition some patients can obtain their insulin through Medicaid.

It is evident therefore that Dr Iturbe’s question is prompted by political motives.
