PARAMARIBO, Suriname; A score of Bollywood movie stars and beauty queens from 35 countries have arrived in Paramaribo for the highly acclaimed Miss India World Wide 2012 beauty pageant to be held here on Saturday, February 25.

The Miss India World Wide pageant in Suriname is a unique event for South America and the Caribbean, Dharmatma Saran, president of India Festival Committee (IFC), which is staging this international event, said during a press conference.

In the Miss India World Wide Pageant, contestants of ethnic Indian origin showcase Indian culture and fashion in combination with western influences. In 2007 Surinamese model and actress Fareisa Joemmanbaks was crowned Miss India World Wide 2007 when the event were staged in New Jersey, USA.

Conceptualized 21 years ago with the first show in the United States of America, where 12 contestants participated with only a handful of patrons in the stands, the show evolved into a world event.

According to Fanisha Salamat, spokeswoman for the Surinamese co-organizer SurIndia Glamour, “The show will be of the highest quality.”

She further noted that Suriname’s Miss India, Varsha Ramrattan, is well-prepared to do well at the contest.

On Tuesday evening, President Desi Bouterse and first lady Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring hosted a dinner and cultural show for the international contestants in the Presidential Palace. In his welcome address the head of state noted that “beauty and love goes hand in hand”.

The week-long events include a Bollywood movie week in TBL Cinema, which started on Tuesday evening, a talent night, an Indian culinary week and fashion and dance show. It is the first time this international pageant is being held in Suriname.
