KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Audley Astwood, son of the late Alex and Elaine Astwood of Grand Turk, was elected president of the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Saturday, September 14.
Astwood said he plans to give more players international exposure and experience in order to move the sport forward on the world stage.
"We need to give more players international experience and exposure. We need to build players for the future," Astwood told local media after his return from Puerto Rico.
"We need assistance to help the countries in the region to raise the level closer to the Pan American region," Astwood said.
He is currently a vice president of the Jamaica Badminton Association and indicated his intention to run for the presidency of the association at the election of officers on September 28.
Astwood, who was born on Grand Turk, spent his early years there before travelling to Jamaica to attend high school and eventually settled there. His parents moved to Jamaica in their later years and passed away there.
He is married to Ann, a Jamaican, and the couple has two children Danah Cameron and Andrew Astwood and two grandsons Elijah and Shiloh (by Danah).
