BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Guyana and Suriname each earned three medals – one silver and two bronze – at the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games, which concluded last week in Baku, Azerbaijan, thereby ranking joint 30th among the 55 countries competing.

For Suriname, Miguel Van-Assen scored silver in the long jump, which was his country’s best performance during the Games. He competed against two Moroccans who took gold and bronze. He also won a bronze in the triple jump competing against two Azeris. Tosh van Dijk scored a bronze medal in taekwondo.

For Guyana, Winston George won a silver medal in the 400m, and a bronze medal in the 200m. Natrena Hooper earned Guyana’s other bronze medal at the games in her favoured event, the women’s high jump.

Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey and Uzbekistan were top medalists at the games. This is the second time that Suriname and Guyana have competed at the Islamic Solidarity Games. Both Guyana and Suriname are members of the Islamic bloc.
