Cuba denies responsibility in baseball fraud
Published on May 19, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- The Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) issued a statement in which it denied any responsibility in relation to the use by Cuban outfielder, Alfredo Despaigne, of a false Dominican Republic passport to register in the Mexican baseball league (LMB).

Alfredo Despaigne
Over the last few days, media outlets have echoed a report by ESPN of a fraud related to Despaigne, member of the Piratas de Campeche team participating in the LMB.

According to ESPN, the registration of the Cuban baseball player in that tournament was carried out with a false Dominican Republic passport.

The statement, reproduced on Friday by Granma newspaper, set out the ethical principles of the FCB and highlighted that the use of a false passport violates the ethical principles of the Federation, an organization that promotes and oversees the contracting of Cuban players by foreign leagues, as part of the new policy of remuneration to athletes and trainers.

The FCB clarified that it has no responsibility whatsoever with the alleged violation of the rules regarding the process of registration of players in the LMB and that it will closely follow developments and the results of investigations in the matter and will announce any decision made in this regard.
