Deputy Prime Minister, Shawn Richards

BASSETERRE, St Kitts -- Gunshots were fired at the home and private vehicle of St Kitts and Nevis deputy prime minister, Shawn Richards, early Friday morning, police confirmed.

Police said they responded to a report of gunfire at around 3:15 am and observed damage to the home and vehicle consistent with gunshots. The value of the damage is unknown at this time. Richards and other family members, who were at home at the time of the incident, were not injured.

Superintendent Lionel Moore said, “This is a rather troubling incident. We urge anyone who may have information with regards to this incident to come forward.”

Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris and his Cabinet condemned the shooting incident in the strongest possible terms.

Many law abiding citizens and residents have conveyed well wishes to the minister and his family, while expressing their abhorrence of the incident.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude, and that of my family, for the numerous calls and messages of encouragement and support in light of this unfortunate incident,” Richards said. “I wish to assure the public that my family and I are safe and we are confident that the law enforcement agencies will handle the matter through to its logical conclusion within the limits of the law.”

Richards added that this incident will not prevent him or his family from going about their normal routines.
