Letter: As Washington falls
Published on August 29, 2017Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

We live, whether we care to admit it or not, in the era of the Washington Model; an extension of the old European post-feudal imperialist model, which has haunted and pillaged the Americas and most other continents since the late 15th century. This model supports itself through war and genocide; and in so far as we are silent about this genocide, which is always occurring in some part of the world – today the Middle East and North Africa – we are complicit in this model.

This model is executed through acts of war and arms sales; the destabilization and decapitation of resistant leaders and governments; the war-backed prestige of the US dollar; mainstream media; global organizations like the IMF, the World Bank, the CIA; and the global surveillance state. Socialism, communism, have acted as a temporary stumbling block; and have at best been ameliorative, for example in the mixed economies in Scandinavia and Northern Europe generally; and at worst, applied in such dogmatic ways as to wither away, not the state, but the economy.

Fortunately, the Washington Model is now withering away. What forces from without have not done – national liberation struggles globally, communism, terrorism, non-alignment – forces within are now bent on doing. These forces could be easily personified. There is none so debauched as Mr Kurtz from Heart of Darkness, John McCain. There is none so wily genocidal than the apple blossom chubby-cheeked Pinocchio, Hillary. And none so congenially apocalyptic as CNN’s hosts, Christiane Amanpour and Fareed Zakaria. These are the faces on the global coin of Empire, terror. The Washington Model is rotting from the insides.

Mouth open, story jump out. In a heated press conference at Trump Tower, New York, the American president’s mouth opened and truth fell out. Responding to irate members of the media who wanted him to unequivocally condemn the KKK, the alt-right, the white nationalists, who were involved in recent tragic riots in Charlottesville, Trump focussed on the felling of Confederate statues. As fell Lenin, Stalin, in the old Soviet era, down went confederate commanders, Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Pulled down with ropes around the necks, kicked on the ground, spat on.

Trump attacked: “I wonder, is it George Washington next week, and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after. You really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop… George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson, do you like him? Are we going to take down the statue? Because he was a major slave owner.”

Washington, the capital city. Washington, the “bad hombre”, owner of slaves. Washington, the heart of modern global imperialism. Washington, the Consensus. Washington, the Model. Washington, US revolutionary hero. Washington, with his head printed on the seminal and powerful US dollar.

None of the reporters and journalists present gave an answer to Mr Trump’s rhetorical question, a deep existential poke at America. They could not. Because they would have questioned, challenged, the very myth of Washington, the myth of America and what she presumes to represent, the Washington Model. And none of the media present, the “conscious” moralizing “liberal/left”, wanted to do that.

Nobody in America wants to question the recent senate-approved US$350 billion arms deal with the Saudis. Who are these weapons to kill? Americans? Chinese? Russians? No. They are to kill people in Yemen, their own recalcitrant citizens, Moslems, Arabs. To protect the Saudi regime, a lackey of US imperialism. A typical act of imperialism: arm lackeys, divide and rule, defeat antagonists, defend the Washington Model. This is the Washington Model in all its full and flaming glory!

The Washington Model is undergoing a major moral crisis. The knickers of the system are in a horrid twist. In a nation that is genocidal from beginning to end, everyone stands accused. The gospelling mainstream media does not know whether it is going or coming. New global configurations are now emerging. Now is the time, the opportunity, to advance our own Caribbean configuration.
