Letter: Cuba's right to sovereignty
Published on July 3, 2017Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

For over two decades, Antigua and Barbuda has enjoyed cordial relations with Cuba.

Further, the United Progressive Party shares a special bond with the government and people of Cuba. For these reasons, we wish to place on record our solidarity with our Cuban brothers and sisters in the face of recent pronouncements by the president of the United States of America.

In our considered opinion, last month’s policy statements by President Trump are incompatible with both the letter and the spirit of non-intervention and constitute an infringement of Cuba's right to sovereignty in general and the right to choose its political, economic, social and cultural system in particular.

Based on our tenure in government between 2004 and 2014 we can attest to the mutually respectful relationship between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba. The relationship has been beneficial for Antigua and Barbuda in the fields of public infrastructure, medical and health services, tertiary education and culture.

The United Progressive Party views Cuba as a fraternal and development partner in the family of Caribbean nations. Any attempt and action taken either to reverse, water down or slow the pace of normalization of relations between the United States of America and Cuba by the current president of the United States must be condemned for its retrogressive, counterproductive and open hostility towards Cuba.

Based on the foregoing, the United Progressive Party hereby expresses firm solidarity with His Excellency Raul Castro's call for an end to hostile rhetoric. We sincerely hope that the upcoming months will see a return to meaningful dialogue based on the principles of mutual respect, national sovereignty and the right to self-determination.

Senator Harold Lovell
Political Leader
United Progressive Party
