Letter: Is the Rowley administration deliberately misleading the population?
Published on May 13, 2017Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

Is the Trinidad and Tobago government deliberately misleading the population with regards to the valuation return forms that are being sent out to people's mailboxes?

letters_icon.jpg
According to the ministry of finance’s website, the version of the Valuation of Land Act 18 of 1969, Section 6, published does not match the current state of the law.

Why then has the ministry of finance omitted the very pertinent omission that is highlighted in the updated 2009 amendments of the Act?

The ministry of finance posted the following on its property tax website, which is cited as the Valuation of Land Act 18 of 1969, Section 6:

Every owner of land in Trinidad and Tobago shall make with the Commissioner, a return of the land in the form set out in Schedule.

Where the owner of land fails to file a return, the Commissioner shall by Notice inform the owner that he is required to file a return, failing which he may be liable to conviction under this section.

However, the Valuation of Land Act updated with the 2009 amendments of the Act to 31st December 2015 states as follows:

Every owner of land in Trinidad and Tobago shall, by 1st April 2010 make with the Commissioner, a return of the land in the form set out in Schedule II.

Where the owner of land fails to file a return 1st April 2010, the Commissioner shall by Notice inform the owner that he is required to file a return, failing which he may be liable to conviction under this section.

The continued inaccurate statements and distorted flow of misinformation coming from this Keith Rowley-led administration are either intentional lies meant to mislead and/or misinform the population or a further indication that the administration is simply unaware of what they are supposed to be doing.

Such actions continue to present the country with a government that is in serious and significant crisis… a government that has lost the public trust and confidence.
