Wind turbine installed at Barbados Ministry of Transport and Work
Published on January 29, 2013 Email To Friend    Print Version

ST LUCY, Barbados -- Solaris Global Energy Limited, the Caribbean’s largest provider of renewable energy products, recently partnered with the Barbados Ministry of Transport and Works in its effort to increase use of renewable energy and reduce energy costs.

On January 11, the Ministry revealed a newly installed 10kW wind turbine at its Chance Hall Depot in St Lucy. Installed by Solaris Global Energy, the wind turbine is an off-grid system with battery backup, making the substation a self-sufficient facility.

“This system will completely power this Chance Hall Depot and indeed our plans are that this depot will be significantly upgraded to represent the depot of the northern area of Barbados, and it will typically be expected to be our first response in this area in times of emergencies like natural disasters or any other emergencies. So the idea of having stand-alone power is a wonderful intervention,” Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce stated.

The Chance Hall Depot is the second renewable energy project for the ministry and represents its commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

“The turbine project is in keeping with the policy for the promotion of significant alternative and renewable solutions in the national development strategy for financial, economic and environmental reasons,” said Permanent Secretary Lionel Nurse.

The turbine, which stands on a 48-foot structure, generates 10kW of energy and stores any excess energy in 20 deep cycle 12V 200 amp/hours batteries.
