West Indies Women upstaged by England
Published on February 6, 2013 Email To Friend    Print Version

MUMBAI, India -- West Indies Women stumbled in their final group match, when England Women beat them by six wickets in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 on Tuesday.

Kyshona Knight hit the top score of 33 and Shanel Daley supported with 30 not out, as the Windies Women, choosing to bat, were dismissed for 101 in 36.4 overs in the Group-A match at Bandra Kurla Complex.

Deandra Dottin snared 3-20 from five overs, but the reigning World Cup champions cantered to their target, crossing the finish line with 90 deliveries remaining.

The Caribbean side were under pressure from the second ball of the match, when Kycia Knight become the first of six batters to be dismissed for a duck, when Katherine Brunt bowled her with the second ball of the match.

The Windies Women were undermined by Anya Shrubsole with 4-21 from 8.4 overs, as they slumped to 31 for six in the 15th over.

Kyshona, Kycia’s twin, and Daley put on 58 for the seventh wicket to temporarily stem the fall of wickets.

But Kyshona was stumped off Arran Brindle in the 34th over trying to force the pace of scoring.

The innings quickly folded with the Windies Women losing their last four wickets for 12 runs in the space of 21 deliveries, as Brindle ended with 3-0 from two overs.

The Windies Women were put under pressure, when Danielle Wyatt and Brindle gave England a steady start, putting on 66 for the first wicket.

Dottin removed Brindle and Taylor in consecutive deliveries to reduce England to 66 for two in 24.2 overs, triggering a wobble in the England batting.

Subrina Munroe trapped Wyatt lbw for the top score of 40 and Dottin also trapped Lydia Greenway lbw for two, as England declined to 79 for four in the 29th over, but Heather Knight and Jenny Gunn ushered the English home.

Both sides qualified for the Super Six stage of the tournament, with West Indies facing recent opponents South Africa in their opening match on Friday at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
