Ukraine thanks Cuba for help to Chernobyl children
Published on September 10, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- Tetiana Saienko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Havana, expressed on Friday her gratitude towards Cuba for the medical attention it has provided, for over two decades now, to close to 25,000 children that were the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

While inaugurating a cultural evening held at the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) on the occasion of the national festival of that eastern European nation, the diplomat recalled her country’s proclamation of independence on August 24, 1991, and highlighted the bonds of friendship maintained between Kiev and Havana, which date back to the second half of the 20th century.

Elio Gamez, first vice-president of the ICAP, recalled Ukraine’s cooperation as part of the then Soviet Union in the technical and professional training of hundreds of young Cubans.

He asserted that commercial and cooperation relations between the two countries are particularly developed in sectors that are of great importance for Cuban economy, like agriculture, transportation, mining and tourism, and are expanding to other areas.
