US Navy launches new initiative in Latin America
Published on August 13, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- Washington has launched a new initiative in Latin America called America Visits the Americas, which consists of expeditions, in what is described as cooperative maritime security operations to enhance inter-operational activities and build partnerships to foster regional security.

Under this umbrella, the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) conducted a port visit to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, while transiting to its home port of San Diego, California, last July 21.

During the port visit, Guantanamo Bay provided diesel fuel as well as 45 pallets of provisions, supplies, and mail. Additionally 30 pallets of Operation Hand Clasp materials, a program that transports educational, humanitarian, and goodwill materials on US Navy ships were loaded.

This ship, and possibly others, is slated to visit several Latin American nations allowing the ship's crew to serve as goodwill ambassadors and experience local culture, according to international media reports that cited the website Navaltoday.com.
