US Coast Guard repatriates 13 Cuban migrants
Published on March 1, 2013 Email To Friend    Print Version

MIAMI, USA -- The US Coast Guard Cutter Knight Island repatriated 13 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba, on Tuesday.

During a routine patrol, the crew aboard a Coast Guard Ocean Sentry aircraft spotted a suspected migrant vessel south of Marquesas Keys, Florida, on Saturday. The crew reported the vessel to Coast Guard Sector Key West and remained on scene until a patrolling vessel responded.

The Coast Guard Cutter William Flores arrived on scene and safely embarked the Cuban migrants.

The migrants were later transferred to the Knight Island for repatriation.

"As the primary federal maritime law enforcement agency, the Coast Guard is tasked with interdicting undocumented migrants attempting to enter the US illegally by sea," said Rear Adm. William Baumgartner, Seventh Coast Guard District commander. "Migrants who travel aboard ill-equipped vessels or smuggled aboard go-fast boats are putting their lives at extreme risk. Our migrant interdiction patrols help save lives by deterring dangerous illegal migrant activity and removing migrants from unsafe environments."

Once aboard a Coast Guard cutter, all migrants receive food, water, shelter and basic medical attention.
