Trinidad fashion launches in London
Published on February 21, 2013 Email To Friend    Print Version

LONDON, England -- Waves: Re-think, the Trinidad and Tobago installation of the International Fashion Showcase was launched at the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in London on Monday during London Fashion Week.

Lisa See Tai, Mark Eastman and Darcel de Vlugt presented a capsule collection to a mixed crowd of fashion and media representatives at the early evening cocktail reception.

Acting High Commissioner Roanna Gopaul welcomed guests to the reception, taking the opportunity to encourage those present to support the development of the fashion industry in Trinidad and Tobago.

Chairman of the University of Trinidad and Tobago, home of the Caribbean Academy of Fashion Design (CAFD), Curtis Manchoon spoke of the work UTT has been doing to develop Trinidad and Tobago as an International Fashion Brand.

“We have embarked on a significant attempt towards developing a ‘Savile Row’ in Trinidad and Tobago with the mentoring of our young graduates... we expect to become an International Brand as we seek to partner them with some of the World’s top professionals in this field,” he said.

For the showcase each designer dressed two models for a mini catwalk presentation of their work and explained their design inspiration to the guests. Additional pieces from each collection were also displayed on mannequins throughout the room. From Darcel de Vlugt’s opulent balls gowns, Mark Eastman’s sharp tailoring and Lisa See Tai’s exploration with print, these new designers successfully challenged long held cliché’s of Caribbean fashion.
