Tri de Spice team represents Grenada in Barbados this weekend
Published on October 3, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada -- Seven athletes from the Tri de Spice triathlon team will head to Barbados on Saturday to represent Grenada in the Barbados International Triathlon. Four members of the team will be competing in the Olympic distance event covering a 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike and 6 mile run while the other three will do half the distance in the sprint race. The Grenada team has typically done extremely well at this event and are expecting to return Sunday night with many awards.

Two of the country’s most promising young athletes will be competing. Chris Regis (21) of Fontenoy will be competing in the Olympic distance race and is expected to be one of the top contenders. Regis is hoping to compete as an elite athlete on the international circuit next year. Calum Noel of Lance Aux Epines will be challenging the region's best in the Sprint distance race. At 15-years-old he isn't even considered a junior until next year but is already showing huge potential in the sport, winning many awards against much older competitors. He is hoping to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in 2014.

Head coach Marc DeCaul said, "The whole team has been working extremely hard and the results are showing. Grenada is easily becoming the leader in the sport within the region, consistently having more athletes on the podium at the races than the other regional countries at competitions this year."

Some of the team are currently preparing for an Ironman 70.3 in Miami later this month and will use this race as a training event. The Miami race will cover a total of 70.3 miles with a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and a half marathon of 13.1 miles to finish off. Two members of the team not racing in Barbados are also preparing for a full Ironman to be held in Cozumel, Mexico later in November. The full Ironman is double the 70.3 mile race.

Grenada is also preparing to host its first ever tag team triathlon on November 3. In this latest form of the event sweeping the globe, teams are made up of one male and one female, the female starts the race, completing all three legs of the triathlon before tagging her male team mate to do the same course.
