PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten -- Police in St Maarten on Sunday arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of an American couple whose bodies were found in their beachfront condominium on Friday.

According to a statement issued by Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos, late Friday morning local police were informed about a possible crime scene in a residence at the Ocean Club Resort in Cupecoy. Upon arrival police discovered the lifeless bodies of a man and a woman. Both appeared to have sustained lethal stab wounds.

The woman was tied to a chair. The man was lying on the floor and partially over another chair.

On Sunday, police spokesman Ricardo Henson said a male suspect had been arrested but had not yet been charged.

The victims, Michael and Thelma King of South Carolina, were part-time residents of St Maarten and owned several homes. King was reportedly a retired insurance executive who later started a successful printing business that he sold. King also owned a couple of restaurants on St Maarten.
