Capella CEO Chairman Horst Schulze
MARIGOT BAY, St Lucia -- Award-winning hotelier, Horst Schulze, who has opened luxury hotels across the globe, gave a motivational speech to the students and faculty of the Arthur Lewis Community College’s Division of Hospitality on Wednesday.
Schulze is a titan in international hospitality and tourism circles, and a highly sought after motivational speaker, more so because of the deep resonance of his personal success story with workers at all levels of the hospitality industry.
Captivating the full auditorium of hospitality students, Schulze talked about his humble beginnings before rising to become one of the hospitality industry’s noted hotel innovators. He also gave a preview of what’s to come at Capella’s latest hotel in Marigot Bay, and how this can translate into opportunity for those desiring more employment options within a service-strong resort brand.
Since the young age of 11 years old, Schulze had always wanted to work in the hotel industry and left home at the age of 14 to work as a busboy in a hotel about 100 miles from a small village in the wine region of Germany where he grew up. He then spent time after leaving Germany in Switzerland, France and England, honing his experience. After time in Europe, Schulze arrived in the US in 1964 and rose through the ranks to become corporate vice president for Hyatt in Chicago in 1983. His career is littered with accolades, one of which is his distinction as a co-founder of the world-famous Ritz-Carlton hotel brand.
With Capella Hotels and Resorts, Horst Schulze has redefined the concept of the modern luxury hotel. Capella Hotels and Resorts, the five-star luxury international hotel group with properties such as Capella Singapore and Capella Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, assumed management of Discovery at Marigot Bay in Saint Lucia after it was acquired by an international development group in August 2013.
Under the direction of this legendary hotelier, Capella Hotels and Resorts has already started to introduce its award-winning service philosophy at its Saint Lucia resort, now rebranded as Capella Marigot Bay, Saint Lucia. With Capella’s planned resort upgrades and dynamic staff training, CEO Schulze said Capella Marigot Bay will meaningfully build upon Saint Lucia’s strong reputation as a first class and diverse tourism centre.
“Capella’s unparalleled service standards are based on years of operating some of the finest hotels in the world and listening to our clients who we encourage to ‘write their own story’ as to the experiences that they desire when staying at one of our properties,” said Schulze. “At Capella, we like to say that as long as a guest’s requests are within ethical, moral and legal confines, we will fulfill them.”
Jeroen Quint, general manager of Capella Marigot Bay, explained that, in keeping with Capella’s emphasis of service excellence, forging connections with hospitality students in countries where Capella operates is “our investment in the human resource development of the industry at the domestic level.”
Through a series of events this week, Capella Marigot Bay is meeting with important constituents from the government, the business and hospitality sector, media and the Marigot Bay community to unveil its brand and discuss matters of mutual interest.
