OECS member states to discuss funding climate change adaptation
Published on February 15, 2012      Print Version

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia -- The OECS Secretariat will convene a two- day workshop to raise awareness and share experiences on instruments and best practices related to financing climate change adaptation and sustainable energy, and to generate feedback on planned future action and partnerships.

A total of 40 persons are expected to participate in this workshop scheduled for Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th February 2012 in Saint Lucia,

This workshop aims to bring together international and regional experts to discuss and explore carbon financing opportunities that will enhance the ability of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as those of the OECS to respond to the challenges of climate change and climate variability.

The pursuit of a green growth agenda that promotes co-benefits in climate adaptation and mitigation; and, which supports scaling-up of renewable energy and other economic resilience-building programmes serves as the vision on which this workshop is initiated.

This two-day exercise will build on the body-of-knowledge on current climate change challenges and the range of climate finance instruments available for adaptation and sustainable energy. The workshop intends to draw on the experiences of case studies and to identify knowledge gaps and areas in which further capacity building efforts will be required.

Participants at the workshop will develop an understanding of: new instruments for accessing climate finance, and taking advantage of carbon markets; climate negotiations and the position of Small Island Developing States (SIDS); OECS Challenges in Adaptation (Watersheds Management, Sustainable Land Management); how to integrate carbon revenues in project financing; mobilizing financial and investment flows to address climate change; and the landscape of international climate finance.

The workshop is being held in collaboration with, and the financial support of, the World Bank Institute.
