HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- Cubana de Aviacion Airlines company will lease six new Russian-Ukrainian AN-158 jets as part of efforts aimed at modernizing the Cuban air fleet for national and regional flights.
The new jets will maintain connections between Cuba, Central America and the Caribbean according to information released during the presentation of the aircraft at the 30th Havana International Trade Fair, Juventud Rebelde newspaper reported.
The lease of the six jets, which includes a purchase option, is in line with a local strategy to modernize and develop the Cubana de Aviacion fleet, stipulated by the guidelines on the Economic and Social Policy adopted by the most recent Congress of the Cuban Communist Party.
The new planes will replace AN-24 jets that would cover national and regional routes and they will contribute higher efficiency in the transportation of passengers and cargo.
Cubana de Aviacion Airlines also operates four TU-204 and three IL-96 aircrafts, particularly for long-distance flights.
