BRADES, Montserrat (GIU) -- The Montserrat Running Club has announced the cancellation of this year’s Volcano Half Marathon, scheduled for December 1, 2012.
In a statement released on the weekend, the club said, “In spite of the best efforts of the Club, the Volcano Half Marathon has been unable to attract sufficient sponsorship and interested runners from both on island and overseas to justify this year’s race.”
Tom Regan, of the Montserrat Running Club said: “This is a disappointing decision, and one that the Club has not taken lightly. In spite of our efforts to publicise the race, the number of runners who have expressed interest is too few to justify staging the Half Marathon. We have also had a significant reduction in our sponsorship level, and would not be able to put on the race to the same high standard as previous years. We have had to take an early decision to cancel, as we would not want people to start their training regimes.”
The Montserrat Running Club said it will continue to organise road and fun run races over the next six months, which they hope to get as many people interested as possible, both on and off island.
This would have been the fourth instalment of the race, which has seen participants from around the Caribbean and the world.
