Mexico reaches final of Caribbean baseball series
Published on February 8, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (ACN) -- Mexico had a walk-off hit on Thursday night against the Dominican Republic with a score of 3-2 to become the first finalist of the Caribbean Baseball Series that is taking place in Margarita Island, Venezuela.

The winning run for the Hermosillo Naranjeros -- current champions of the Mexican Pacific League, came in the ninth inning and was scored by Yuniesky Sanchez, and driven in by a decisive hit of Sebastian Valle.

The match became a pitching duel between the starters Alfredo Aceves (Hermosillo) and Cuban Yuniesky Maya (Licey), who kept their rivals in an iron grip while on the mound.

They both coincidentally allowed their rivals one earned run and three hits.

The Mexicans were losing 2-1, but they managed to tie the game thanks to the terrible performance of the Dominicans relievers, who conceded three walks and a dead-ball in the eighth inning.

The win was for relief pitcher Oliver Perez, while Guillermo Mota, who allowed the decisive run in the ninth inning, took the loss.

On Sunday, Mexico will play for the competition title against the winner of Friday’s match between the Mayagüez Indios from Puerto Rico and the host squad Magallanes Navegantes.
