Maduro sworn-in as president in charge of Venezuela; election set for April 14

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Executive vice president Nicolás Maduro was sworn in as president in charge of Venezuela in the National Assembly in the evening hours of Friday. The government announced on Saturday afternoon that its presidential election will be held on April 14.

The swearing-in session on Friday was attended by international guests, including Rafael Correa, re-elected president of Ecuador, among others.

Diosdado Cabello, president of the National Assembly, began by recognizing that this was an unpleasant and unthinkable occasion.

However, he noted its constitutionality in accordance with the law, which was approved by the people in a referendum.

After confirming the quorum required, the agenda was read, which included only the swearing in accordance with the provisions of Article 233 of the constitution, which was also read.

Cabello recalled that former president Hugo Chavez showed the path to follow and called for Maduro to be elected as head of the government, "and that is what we are doing today," without delay and in due time.

The Assembly then proceeded with the swearing-in of Maduro as president in charge of Venezuela.

Cabello said they were assuming a great commitment with history and added, despite the great pain and sorrow, they yet had a lot of things to do.
