Letter: Would Club Med have been a better choice for Punta Ballena
Published on January 2, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

I couldn’t agree more with the side bar in recent edition of Que Pasa -- Puerto Rico’s official tourist magazine -- describing Punta Ballena in Guanica as one of the most beautiful places on the island. Why then is its care and grooming totally ignored? Ignored by the DRN (Department of Recursas Naturales), ignored by the department of tourism, and ignored by the government.

The jungle is threatening to take over the “white sand beaches”, sending out tendrils of vines closer and closer to the shoreline, thereby shrinking the “white sand beach” to almost nothing. The real tragedy comes into view with a short stroll around the point. There one finds loads of garbage, led by plastic soap containers, pieces of construction debris and other forms of garbage. The real tragedy is that an hour a week with a tractor pulling a rake, and this “most beautiful place” would indeed be worthy of such a title.

There is an access road off PR 333 that makes it easy to rake the beach and make it a place for Puerto Rico to be proud of. In the 1990s, there was talk of Punta Ballena becoming a “Club Med”. This attack was successfully avoided because of community pressure. Where is the community pressure to bring Ballena back to past glory? After a recent visit, when we found no shade, no palapas, not even a garbage can, one wonders if Club Med would have been a better choice for the present and future of Punta Ballena.
