Letter: Plans to revive economic activity in Grenada are now achieving objectives
Published on July 18, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

By now the naysayers were expecting chaos and mayhem in the Grenadian economy. The implosion they forecasted certainly has not happened and this has placed the “badmouthers” in a kind of dilemma! They continue to heap scorn on all the government programs without even offering any feasible or sensible alternatives. How unpatriotic!

While the enemies of progress bask in their shallow negativity the blaming and finger pointing continues. Amidst all of this, the government continues to take the necessary, prudent measures which would ensure that the nation returns to economic prosperity. The signs are on the horizon of a bright future for the country. The recent approval by the IMF and World Bank of the recovery plan of the administration is a very positive development. It signals that the government is well on its way to achieving its goal of prudent fiscal management and economic development.

Tax Reform

Some of the initiatives implemented by the new administration are already having an impact. The significant reduction in wastage is one such example. The matter of tax reform is perhaps the most controversial of all the measures taken. Again, the government must be commended for having the courage to tackle the issue head on. The voices of descent could at least acknowledge that not all of the tax measures are to be implemented in 2014. There is a strange irony in all of this. We expect the taxpaying citizens of other countries to provide economic assistance to our country while we gripe about our own contribution to national development. Is this fair play?

Dialogue with Social Partners

Critical in all of this, is the government’s willingness to engage and dialogue with social partners. This is one way of saying: “We do not have all the answers – come let us build this nation together!” Another admirable step taken by the government is the establishment of the Integrity in Public Life Commission. The legislation for the establishment of the commission was passed in late 2007. When the NNP government demitted office July 2008 all that was required by the new administration was the staffing of the commission.

Although the Integrity in Public Life Bill was part of an agreement with the OAS to fight against money laundering, corruption in public life, etc. Unfortunately, the former government did nothing to ensure the commission was up and running. The subsequent setting up of the commission to deal specifically with these matters is indeed an extraordinary accomplishment.

Social Safety Net and Poverty Reduction

The new Keith Mitchell administration is fully aware that government does not have all the resources to do everything at the same time. However, appropriate steps have been taken to ensure that the poor, vulnerable and marginalized in our society receive as much help as possible. The special needs program provides several benefits for such needy citizens. Education and employment creation play a pivotal role in taking a nation out of poverty and that’s why the government is keen on developing and implementing projects is rural communities. The St Mark flood mitigation project and the Market Access and Rural Enterprise Program (MAREP) agricultural farm road in New Hampshire are two such examples.

The Preservation of Jobs

While the governments of the region grapple with the same economic hardship we are faced with, this administration is skillfully maneuvering its fiscal policy. Over $40 million have been paid in back pay to public servants. It is extremely interesting to note that the back pay deal was struck almost in the dead of night on the eve of an election by the same economic anarchists who now have all the answers!

To have done all of this while preserving jobs is indeed a remarkable achievement!

Grenada Successfully Hosts CPL Matches

Special mention must be made of the recent Caribbean Premiere League (CPL) matches staged at our magnificent National Stadium. Of course the haters wanted it to flop! And once again, they were left licking their wounds – they failed miserably! The matches were shown to well over 200 million households worldwide, and the tremendous promotion the CPL offered Grenada would undoubtedly yield great economic benefits in the medium to long term.

grenadianclass:

Julius Gabriel you seems to be a dreamer. Grenada is in its worst economic condition ever thanks to gross mismanagement of the nations economy by Keith Mitchell and the NNP. Talking about the CPL games is a major success is a gross insult to the intelligence of Grenadians and hence the reason why Grenadians are seen as backward thinking by people in the wider Caribbean.

The CPL games were a complete failure. Its a shame that government would pay $ 500,000 US dollars to host the games and had to resort to giving free tickets to party supporters to enter the stadium.

Apart from that a total black out was placed on the broadcast of the games on Saturday. Julius did you see the response of the Guyanese to the game played there on Thursday 17th. You should be ashame of yourself .

Your false hood shows that you are an individual void of honesty, integrity and credibility. Its people like you that have this NNP government literally ' raping' the country.

What you referred to a major accomplishments of this government are issues that was never a part of the party's manifesto. Examine your list properly and see if what you are saying is accurate.

This NNP administration dismissed thousands of public workers upon taking office. There are massive retrenchment in the private sector and businesses are closing while other are losing profits daily.

This administration has imposed a litany of taxes on the Grenadian people that is unprecedented in the history of the country. Please get you head examine. seems like your brain needs to be re-wired .

There has been a rapid increase in poverty since 2013 when the NNP got into office. Prostitution is on the rise and youth unemployment is approaching 60%. Thought you would have also say unemployment is down by 7% , construction increased by 20% as mentioned in the NNP propaganda ad. Seems like you missed those bits of information because you know they are blatant lies.

This NNP administration don't have a clue of how to get Grenada out of this economic malaise. Keith Mitchell has to kiss the IMF butt in a shameless manner in an effort to protect his legacy. Keith is the biggest political error in the history of Grenada.

FOR GRENADA TO GROW KEITH MITCHELL AND THE NNP MUST GO !!!!!!

Julius Gabriel:

Grenadianclass, you have to be joking or you are a psychopath.

In this period where the Grenadian economy is showing signs of recovery and to say 'Grenada is in its worst economic condition ever' is pure Old Talk from one who is still suffering from the devastating defeat in the last general elections. 15 nil to the NNP. In case you can't remember, Nazim Burk and the NDC was selling state assets to pay Public workers salary in the last few months they were in control. In the few weeks leading up to the general elections Nazim Burke signed an agreement to pay a 6% salary increase to public workers and Teachers and also a back pay of over 40 million to be paid after the elections. An election he knew they could not win. Their hope was to saddle the new government with this huge bill hoping that they would not be able to pay it. Well I could understand their thinking, if they could not pay salaries on time, the NNP will fall on their face to now having to pay back pay and increase in salaries in addition to the monthly salaries.

The new Government came in and agreed to honour the commitment of the NDC and paid the increase in salary and the back pay without selling any public assets. Also, please be reminded, that the NNP Administration inherited an economy with a financing gap of 18 million monthly. In fact the Government which you were apart of was spending 18 million more per month than they were collecting in revenue.

Today the NNP has reduced the financing gap to 10 million in less than 16 months, it's still high but it is moving in the right direction. Not only is the NNP Government paying public workers salaries monthly but on time as well, something you could not do, and also they are not selling any assets to achieve it.

As far as I realize, you will continue to remain in opposition spewing out your venom against Dr Mitchell and the government, but the only person I think is likely to get hurt is you for the country is moving on and the majority of the people are giving their full support to the government because they are now seeing the benefits of the sacrifices they were call to make towards the economic recovery of the country.

We are now seeing the money flowing to the country from the IMF,CDB and the world bank as Dr Mitchell told us will happen. (US 28.2 million and counting) This is translating into JOBS, JOBS, JOBS for the people. Almost 4000 are on the road working and over 3000 enrolled in the New Imani. I know you said the Imanis are not employed but they are receiving over 700 a month for the 24 months they are in the program. What is known, they will not be on the unemployment line.

So go on loser. The people were right about you and your cohorts all along. They are enjoying the growth in the economy and are congratulating Dr Mitchell and the Government for their wisdom and Vision in leading the country in this crisis.

They are singing the same chorus.

'For Grenada to Grow, Nazim Burke and the NDC had to GO!

grenadianclass:

200 years after slavery the only thing you Julius Gabriel and the NNP can talk about is the de-bushing program. This is gross BACKWARDNESS in a modern society. Keith Mitchell and the NNP has been in government for almost fifteen years and there is nothing substantial that you can talk about except for the de bushing program with give a forthnight to poor unskilled people. Where are the construction jobs, the investors that were line up to come to Grenada.

If Keith Mitchell had any wisdom or vision he won't have had to take Grenada to the IMF UNDER A STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM. That is not wisdom or vision but rather DOTISH ECONOMICS. As Keith would say its VOODOO ECONOMICS.

Judgement has already been passed on Mitchell and the NNP . FAILURE OF IMAGINABLE PROPORTION. KEITH SOLD THE ELECTORATES A FAIRY TALE AND HE CAN'T DELIVER HENCE THE reason for THE IMF.

Talking about inherited NDC inherited Keith Mitchell and the NNP DEBTS OF OVER 1,8 BILLION DOLLARS.

The entire country is HURTING under the KEITH MITCHELL TAX POLICIES. PURE DOTISH ECONOMICS.

TAKING ABOUT THE IMANI GOVERNMENT IS JUST PLAYING POLITICS WITH THE YOUNG PEOPLE. YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IS ALMOST 60% THANKS TO THE DOTISHNESS OF KEITH MITCHELL AND THE NNP. US $ 500000 ON THE CPL THAT ' BUSTED' YET ANOTHER ECONOMIC FAILURE.

JULIUS WHEN WILL YOU GET IT THAT KEITH MITCHELL AND THE NNP IS BAD FOR GRENADA. THE BIGGEST ERROR THAT THE PEOPLE MADE WAS TO VOTE NNP BACK INTO OFFICE . THOUSANDS ARE NOW REGRETTING THAT DECISION

WHEN HAS THE WORD 'IMF ' BECOME A PART OF KEITH MITCHELL AND THE NNP DICTIONARY. KEITH CRITICISED THE IMF DAY AFTER DAY , NOW LIKE A DOG RUNNING BACK TO ITS VOMIT HE HAS TO SWALLOW HIS PRIDE AND FALSE EGO AND RUN LIKE A SLAVE TO THE IMF ALL BECAUSE OF HIS VOODOO ECONOMICS.

WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT AGREED TO HONOUR COMMITTMENT. PUBLIC WORKERS ARE DUE THEIR RETRO-ACTIVE PAY AND GOVERNMENT ' MUST ' PAY LIKE IT OR NOT. BS you talking.

THE fact remains that Keith Mitchell and the NNP is BAD for Grenada. Keith has put Grenada in a monkey pants with debts and he want to shift the blame . COWARD!!!! WHEN KEITH PASSES ON GRENADIANS will rejoice the political error has finally been solved naturally.

I MAINTAIN THAT GRENADA IS IN ITS WORSY ECONOMIC SITUATION EVER. BANKS ARE SHUTTING DOWN, BUSINESSES ARE CLOSING , WORKERS ARE BEEN RETRENCHED , ECONOMIC GROWTH IS 0% , INVESTMENTS ARE DEAD, DEBTS ARE HIGH, UNEMPLOYMENT EXTREMELY HIGH, DEMORALISE WORK FORCE AND A CABINET THAT HAS NO IDEA HOW TO GET THE ECONOMY MOVING. KEITH IS IRRELEVANT AS FAR AS THOUSANDS OF GRENADIANS ARE CONCERN.

THE ' asphalt ' is a MISERABLE FAILURE LIKE IT OR NOT THAT IS A FACT.

CORRUPTION IS ONCE AGAIN RAISING ITS UGLY HEAD, CRONYISM IF STRIVING. KEITH AND THE NNP is doing the same OLD thing and expect a different result.

JULIUS GABRIEL FOR GRENADA TO EVER GROW THE 'ASPHALT ' AND THE NNP HAVE TO GO . TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY.

WOULD YOU HAVE EVER IMAGINE KEITH MITCHELL HAVING TO BE A SLAVE IN THE IMF POCKET AN ORGANISATION HE VILIFIED AND CONDEMNED.

KEITH MITCHELL + NNP = STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT , TAXES AND THE IMF = FAILURE.
