Dear Sir:

Many moons ago, I first heard the words, "I'm sorry, sir, but you're over qualified," uttered to Sidney Poitier in the popular block-buster film, "To Sir with love." I must confess that I was baffled by what to me was the only interpretation those words could possess. I wondered for several years how on earth could anyone be possibly "overqualified?" I did not understand it. I grew-up with the impression/understanding that education was almost everything one would need for a productive and prosperous life. The notion that anyone could be "overqualified" made absolutely no sense to me. In my estimation, the more qualifications one possessed, the better.

Well, not so fast! Life is an awesome teacher, and we 'sometimes' learn that "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear." It is therefore no wonder that some of our fellow men never learn life-lessons despite having the best teachers and university lecturers available. These students are simply, not ready!

Since Sidney Poitier's experience in England occurred, I have seen and heard numerous examples of this "over-qualification" argument presented. In all honesty, that defence in some cases is legitimate and acceptable, although it is mostly overused as a means of discrimination.

Examples Please?

1) A and B apply for a job, and there is almost no difference in their "non-educational" or academic merits. They appear to be equal to the job, and the ONLY difference is that A has a Master's degree and B has a Bachelor's degree. The Company selects and hires B instead of A, simply based on their educational levels. The Company prefers B, because they could pay him $20,000 to $40,000 less, per year.

2) A has a Master's degree and applies for a job, while the three members of the interview panel all have Bachelor's degrees. A does NOT get the job because all three persons feel threatened by A's superior academic qualifications. They feel that at some point in time, should A perform credibly, he would be comfortably positioned to replace them. (He is capable of taking over their jobs). A is therefore "overqualified."

3) A has a Master's degree and applies for a job. He is being interviewed by a CEO who is under pressure by his Board of Directors to reduce his company's expenses. Cost-cutting measures are in force, and this CEO is partially paid based on his ability to reduce expenses. His remuneration is based on profitability, so reduced expenses is terribly important. The lower he could reduce expenses, the more his bonus becomes. A is undoubtedly the best candidate, but he is deemed to be "over-qualified."

4) A has a Master's degree, applies for a job, and is being interviewed. He is NOT hired because the honest interviewer really does believe deep in his heart that A is worth much more than his company is prepared to pay for that job. The interviewer as a result, considers A to be "over-qualified."

The Result?

If A wants a job, one smart thing to do would be to NOT disclose that he has a Master's degree, only listing his Bachelor's or Associates degree on his resume. That way, the employers would not feel guilty of not paying him what he is really worth. They would also feel less threatened by A's superior qualifications, and could comfortably feel justified by paying him less than market conditions dictate.

One could reasonably ask, "Why would you want a job anyway? Why not go out and create a job for yourself, if you are so well qualified?"

To me, the answers are simple. First of all, one could work for an employer AND still have businesses on the side! This is not brain surgery! Even in little St Vincent, couldn't a civil servant have a family-run shop in their home, buy a van having a trusted relative run it, AND hook-up with another relative to buy a fishing boat and seine? How many streams of income is one limited to having?

In the USA, it may be a little different. If you chose to, why not have a traditional job and have a business or businesses, on the side? How simple or complicated is it to sell Avon or Mary Kay part-time?

More seriously though, a regular full-time job does several things. It could offer you a company car with all expenses paid, depending on the job. A regular job could offer a 401k, and health insurance, both of which are absolutely invaluable. A regular job most of all, not only provides an extra income, but it also contributes to your retirement benefits and eventual pension.

The Distinct Possibility of Abuse

Okay, so you have tailored your resume for a particular job, eliminating any qualifications which may become deal-killers. That information is on the internet, since you may have applied online. Someone maliciously, is snooping around, and finds that information. They do not see some of your ACTUAL qualifications, because they were not listed due to the reasons listed above. They therefore, could innocently judge the book by the cover. After all, they saw the resume, and the information they were seeking is simply not there. What they do not know is the ADDITIONAL information that caused what they saw to be recorded in that limited manner.

Step it up one notch. How about a person who is up to no good? What is to stop that individual from completely fabricating that information and publicizing it? What is to stop anyone from cutting and pasting anything they desire and making it public?

On a Lighter Note

Many years ago, I did something similar, but this was simply DONE AS A JOKE. I was at work in an office with about 12 other people, and was reading a newspaper. I saw a photo of a couple locked in a sensuous embrace, and a thought immediately flashed through my mind. I made a photocopy of that photo, then I made a photo-copy of a photo of the boss and his wife. I cut out the faces of the boss and his wife, and stuck them on the photo of the sensuous couple in that embrace. I made another photocopy of that creation of mine. The entire office had a riotous laugh! They remembered that joke for months.

Another day, I was reading the newspaper and saw a photo of a very attractive, half-dressed young lady, so I photocopied it. I cut-out the photo and wrote on it: "Bob. Yours, Judy." I slipped it in my friend Bob's shirt pocket, and we all had a laugh. Bob innocently put the cut-out photo back in his shirt pocket and went home. A day or so later, Bob's wife found the photo in his shirt pocket and gave him hell. He came to work and told us the story.

Those are humorous experiences, but let us consider that dishonest, devious and deceptive, individuals could also easily utilize fraudulent methods to create and achieve fraudulent results.

Seriously

Look at what has just happened in Egypt this past week, and is still ongoing as we speak. A silly, bigoted, mendacious and misguided individual with the assistance of others has indirectly caused the death of the US diplomat there, along with three other individuals. The Middle East is in turmoil now, simply because one stupid, shady, treacherous, unprincipled individual posted a cheap untruthful video online.

The internet today is a blessing, but in many ways, it has become an awful curse to humanity, simply based on man's dishonesty and inhumanity to man.

He went on to speak about how we both were members of the Bermuda Police Force, and I eventually rose to the rank of Commissioner of Police there.

He mentioned that we had frequent conversations, and that I married a Bermudian lady.

Palmer went on to state that I lived in Bermuda for almost 40 years. In other words, PALMER KNEW ME VERY WELL!

Now Palmer is CLAIMING that I am someone else in his post above.

Where is his consistency and honesty?

Just how stupid and delusional could he be?

How much of a liar could Palmer be?

He went to Dominica where he quickly ran afoul of the law and had to "run for his life." He himself acknowledged this on CNN.

SHORTLY AFTER THAT, he went to Bermuda where he again got himself in legal hot-water.
