Letter: SVG, We Blind!
Published on May 22, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

After my last letter entitled “Vincies grin and bear it,” I had to go back in the St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) calypso archives, because several people has told me I missed a pertinent calypso. It’s funny, they had the same calypso I had in mind. So, I had to inform them that I was already at work with that one from “Crazy Angle”.

Therefore, I say come in “Crazy Angle” with “We Blind”! Yes, we blind!

Years ago, every week banana (green gold) trucks used to be backed up for miles, waiting to offload the green gold at the Kingstown port. Today, the green gold fields have been tarnished by the black sigatoka disease.

So much so, that many of the farmers have abandoned their green gold fields. Additionally, other agricultural products are now hit with mealy bug infestations and recent shipments to Trinidad and Tobago were sent packing back to SVG. So when they say it’s tourism now and agriculture is dead and a thing of the past, I say come in “Crazy Angle,” come in, “We Blind”! I say, SVG, they blind!

I remembered when former Prime Minister (PM) Mitchell said, “Bat but don’t score,” they aggressively went after him. But when the current PM was accused of raping a policewoman from his security detail, they held a rape rally. Tell them “Crazy Angle,” tell them, “We Blind”! I say, SVG, they blind!

Formerly, the Kingstown General Hospital, now the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH), was one of the most baby-friendly hospitals in the region. But today there is a lack of medicine (simple drugs) at the MCMH. People are going to the MCMH and taking their own sheets, pillow cases and even toilet paper.

Now, when the current PM said SVG has a second-to-none hospital, I am asking, like “Crazy Angle,” if he is blind. Because even he and his son had to go overseas to Barbados and elsewhere for medical attention.

The health services in SVG are in a crisis. Did this government forget about the rats in schools and the police stations? Or the cases of leptospirosis under their watch? Well, don’t talk about the pending epidemic of chikungunya disease in SVG. We have never had it like this before in SVG, because as “Crazy Angle,” said, “We Blind”! I say, SVG, they blind!

I could not leave without addressing the condition of the roads in SVG. How they laughed and carried on about the farm roads, calling them gouti tracks. Seems like the nation will welcome some gouti tracks today because of the daily game of bob and weave or vehicle boxing.

The potholes in the nation’s roads have become swimming pools and the spectrum of drums in the areas where the roads are undermined continues to grow. So, when they are told not to worry about the road conditions, we will give you enough money to buy SUV’s! Boy, they need to listen to “Crazy Angle,” because as he said, “We Blind”!

Or is it, they blind? I say, SVG, they blind! They totally blind! Now, I am taken back to my childhood days and the nursery rhyme, “Three blind mice”!

Peace and justice and get real.
