Letter: Maurice Bishop
Published on June 27, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

In her letter about the greatness of Maurice Bishop, Helen Grenade describes him as "rising from a modest and humble beginning." You could say that about Eric Gairy, who came from the village of Moyah, but Maurice Bishop was middle class. His father built and owned a block of apartments at Morne Rouge and Maurice was sent to law school in England. His mother, the late Alimenta Bishop, was a La Grenade, related to our governor general.

Also Helen Grenade left out the fact that Bishop imprisoned thousands without trial and presided over the importation of electric torture machines from communist countries. Many of Bishop's victims are today still suffering from physical and mental problems due to the torture and some have died because of it.

Also Bishop presided over the labour camp at Hope Vale where Rastafarians rounded up in the hills were made to work at gunpoint growing food for soldiers. Thus Bishop was the first to re-introduce slavery to Grenada since it was abolished in 1833.

There are those who can give evidence that Bishop outed his cigarettes in the flesh of those being tortured and one can give evidence of Bishop pushing a lighted cigarette up his nose.

Helen Grenade:

Propaganda will not work, after thirty years of his assassination, you are still carrying hate, Bishop may have had privilege
e parents but, he dedicated his life to country and its people. Remember how he was beaten and abused by Gairy's Mongoose Gang, because he wanted justice for the less fortunate, You are one of the counterrevolutionaries, you helped in his assassination, that's why you are so full of hate and jealousy. Why are you hiding behind fake names, come out and be yourself.
