Letter: Mary, Mary, full of grace
Published on May 3, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

Congratulations to Mary Isaac and the team that includes Wilfred Pierre as first vice president; Cletus Cyril, second vice president; and Alvin Launders, third vice president. The reelection of Mary Isaac as president of the Saint Lucia Civil Service Association (CSA) for a third two-year term could not have come at a better time, polling 43% of the 3,100 members of the CSA. This was a remarkable feat, enough, to keep the infidels of the St Lucia Labour Party and Kenny Anthony in the boondocks for the next 24 months.

With jazz in the air, they must be drowning their sorrows as if there is no tomorrow, starting immediately after the results were broadcast live on television on Wednesday, April 30. Whether Kenny Anthony and his cronies like it or not, they will be in a mesmerizing state of mind for the next 24 months while the job of repositioning the CSA begins, and more than ever as Kenny Anthony continues to disrespect the public service and workers of Saint Lucia.

The proposed reduction of five percent in salaries across the board, without consultation, will be the first order of business. Why? Kenny Anthony is displaying bad character. Despite the good faith attempt of the CSA last year, via a membership vote, to forego a salary increase, Kenny Anthony unilaterally deposited a four percent salary increase on 2,500 members of the CSA. The increase was configured as one percent for year one, 1.5 percent for year two and 1.5 percent for year three.

I really don’t know who Kenny Anthony was trying to impress. Surely not Mary Isaac, because hardly one year later Anthony’s entire largesse has fallen flat on its face.

These were his remarks at the closing of the debate on the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure 2014/2015, last Wednesday April 30: "I have had tough decisions to make and I have had the courage to do it. I am prepared to pay the consequences for this country because I want to secure our future. And so, I am not afraid of the journey ahead. I know it will be a lonely journey but those who are willing to join hands to save this country are welcomed.”

No wonder, and so he has the audacity to invite the CSA to a consultation meeting on Friday May 2, to say what: that the SLP administration had no choice but to table an austerity budget?

Public servants are having a hard time calming themselves that Kenny Anthony has no idea of the economic space he manages; its strength and its weakness, its stability factors and growth modules. Yet, he is the minister for finance in Saint Lucia by default of being the prime minister. There is a saying, “Only a fool breaks his own heart.” What a disgrace!

Now he is angry at his doltish self, having to put on a performance to swallow unpalatable gray matter, all alone in full view of the public, while singing to a cash register musical beat like his friend and business associate Allen Chastanet in private.

As is customary, if I give you, I can take it back; Kenny Anthony is unilaterally taking back his four percent increase plus one percent for inconvenience, from not only the CSA, but eventual all of the workers of Saint Lucia and the business community to hasten economic death by incompetence. By Kenny Anthony’s action he looks like a strong arm dictator -- showing his natural self.

Now on the final leg of his political life, he is shedding his biggest gripe like a baby boy in his mother’s arms. Unfortunately, he never expected to remain in the arms of Mary Isaac following the CSA election. And so, I encourage Mary Isaac to muster her tremendous courage, demonstrate all the grace she has to carry Kenny Anthony in her arms. Carefully, nurture him. Like a baby boy, breastfeed him and care for him until early elections in 2015, if not before.

Mary Isaac, your reward is with the membership of the CSA, God and country.
