Letter: LPM statement on Crystal St Omer's murder
Published on August 30, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

The senseless murder of Crystal St Omer should not only serve as a time of grieving for her family and friends, but it should also be taken as a wakeup call to all Saint Lucian parents. The days of innocence, when our children could walk safely through the streets of Saint Lucia, may have ended.

We all can pretend that the sudden disappearances of fellow citizens, which are becoming commonplace in our country, are all isolated incidents and that there are not organized and underground criminal networks responsible for these disappearances. However, the truth remains. By the time we awake to the changing nature of Saint Lucian society, our island will have become an entity overrun by gangs and other criminal interests.

Independence was supposed to have brought prosperity and to deliver our small nation state a resilient culture, driven by hard work and opportunities for advancement. Moreover, given the bleak economic outlook for St Lucia, it is very difficult to comprehend why the goal isn’t to safeguard our island’s reputation abroad as a law abiding nation, where safe and endless summers are guaranteed not only to the citizens of Saint Lucia, but also to the tourists coming from miles away to vacation on our shores.

However, it seems that a post independence St Lucia may have rendered us void of the pride that is needed to build a stable, peace loving, and harmonious nation of equal rights, especially the right to life.

The kind of Saint Lucia we have become, where children and seniors are preyed upon and targeted for possible sexual abuse and murder, is indicative of a greater underlying social and criminal problem plaguing the nation. When the youths of our country can no longer have a future of longevity to look forward to, this should be troubling not only to the government of Saint Lucia, but also to our entire populace.

As the leader of the Lucian People’s Movement (LPM), I do not give a damn about your political allegiances, your motives for remaining silent when your party is in power, or your motives to criticize unfairly when your party is out of power.

My admonition to all citizens of Saint Lucia is to take stock of what is happening in our country and to act as responsible citizens to bring Saint Lucia back on track. Our resolve and determination to fight against the criminal elements among us should equal the enthusiasm we show for supporting political organizations during any given election year.

Used to Love Nevis:

Pay attention to this message! This is exactly what has happened on Nevis and now it isn't safe to live there or even visit. Robberies, murders and violence are commonplace. No one calls names and the bad people get away with their crimes. Put an end to it now before it gets worse. St. Lucia cannot afford to ignore these issues!
