The majority of Grenadians say they are optimistic or very optimistic about the future of the country. They are encouraging each other to cast their votes for the Grenada New National Party for energetic, knowledgeable candidates who are seeking to unseat an incumbent we rarely ever see, and has done nothing to address its socio-economic problems.

We have evolved into an ineptocracy as a nation, a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of the diminishing number of producers. Tillman Thomas was elected to his current high office because the NDC believe compassion should temper the severities of meritocracy.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas was elected to get things done and improve the lives of men and women and families in Grenada. He made promises to the people; promises he never kept. He has not delivered. From day one, the people’s concerns were not his priority. Be it employment, creating jobs, fixing our health care system, providing for our seniors.

Thomas has been absent in everything. Today Grenadians are disappointed and are placing their trust in the Leader of the Grenada New National Party, Dr the Hon. Keith C. Mitchell. His actions speak volumes, regarding what he has accomplished to date. The people of Grenada have every confidence that he will continue to address the many concerns that impact their daily lives.

One resident I spoke with, Mrs Paula Mark Mc Phail, said, “The New National Party will emerge victorious in the upcoming general election, and so I am feeling a little bit better as a Grenadian. We are now in a depression, but there is a sense that the days to come will be better under the leadership of Dr Mitchell, than under this present NDC administration. That we have to put behind us.”

Anxiety about employment is the number one concern people have about livability. So the fact that the unemployment have reached higher heights, people are being laid off by the hundreds, hotels closing their doors, businesses going under, our general hospital has no medications for their patients, or to attend to its sick. The only hope for the people is a quick change of government; this is what influencing the people’s optimism.

The New National Party Parliamentary Representative for St Andrews North West, Mrs Delma Thomas, believes, “We have the greatest disparity of income in the country. The majority of our children live in poverty. Tillman Thomas cannot lead, and since he cannot lead, then he need to bow out, or call elections. And if he doesn’t, he’s going to be as easy to live with as a nest of bedbugs for the next few months. If the NDC doesn’t know this by now, let’s just say we’re not dealing with Mensa candidates here.”

Grenadians no longer trust the prime minister, they are ready to move on, and they want to rid themselves of the NDC. It’s going to get more stupid from this point forward if they don’t expedite a divorce, because the people running the country are not prudent enough to take seriously. They are an argument without an end. Grenada remains tragically paralyzed and utterly incapable of dealing with the NDC train wreck that our economy has become.

Thomas is protecting himself first and foremost by proroguing parliament with no regard for those unemployed citizens, the decaying economy. In fact, because of his latest stunt, he has taken the people out of the conversation entirely so that he can advance his policy changes without the messy democratic process getting in the way. It is singularly offensive, since he did it to take away rights. If Thomas had any credibility as a job creator with a soft spot for the troubles faced by Grenadians, it’s been utterly erased with this callous act of duplicity. To play politics with people’s very livelihoods is the worst kind of chicanery. He needs to swallow his pride and reconvene Parliament. He’s resting on his laurels for too long.

If we Grenadians take the time and try very hard, we might find small shades of sympathy, starting with this government being shortsighted enough to bring some kind of deliverance to the people. Every time that Tillman Thomas insists it’s just a cyclical lag, they set off more tidal waves of cognitive dissonance than the average USA presidential debate.

Everyone agrees the prime minister can’t lead, and he’s the last one who seems to accept it. He serves no practical use to the people of Grenada. And no matter what words the NDC use, they’ve run out of delicate ways to send him that message. Right now, there is a fight going on in Grenada to make it more equitable. For the majority of Grenadians, Mitchell is the best choice to get and keep us moving in the right direction. He is a man of integrity and a great leader. Never has the choice been so clear. He is the hardest working politician on the island.

The New National Party needs increased support from all Grenadians if they want the next five years to be effective. Grenada is facing one of the most challenging times in its history. Let’s not be complacent, we have to get out and vote for our candidates, let’s take it to victory, whenever Tillman Thomas decides to reconvene the Grenada people’s parliament and call urgent elections.

Thomas has shown that he’s willing to do and say anything to remain in high office. He has shown he is not deserving of our confidence as a leader, our trust, and most certainly our votes. He has to defend a record that contains massive screw ups, and with the economy sluggish after almost five years, the prime minister has a good deal of Ricky Ricardo ‘splainin’ to do. It is clear that he cannot bring himself up to Mitchell’s level. He will have only himself to blame. It’s understandable that he would feel stung by his poor grades and dismal record. Mr Thomas, a man’s word is his bond. You lied and betrayed the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

Judging by what’s happening in Grenada, Thomas’s actions are being focused solely on taking Grenada and its people down. He hasn’t been a proponent of even one issue. He stands for nothing. I think the people are getting tired of guys like him coming onto the political scene with no useful experience. In the old days, people would call this guy a loser. Today, we call him a NDC candidate.

As we approach the next general election, it is critical the candidates move beyond speeches to a new phase: action.

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States of America, once said, “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.” Mr Thomas, the best thing, the right thing is to reconvene parliament and call elections. Time to ease all the suffering in our land of Grenada.
