Letter: Depriving children of Laventille West of quality education
Published on February 20, 2014 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

The children of Laventille West are being deprived of a quality education as a result of the mismanagement of the upgrades and repairs of their schools.

There is poor management of the primary schools and the secondary schools in the Laventille area and in schools where Laventille West students are enrolled. This lack of physical integrity of area schools has compromised the environment of learning which is unsuited for the educational instruction and the healthy development of the students.

The school is the critical link with the home in the nurturing of children and in their education. This partnership is strengthened when the educational environment is well managed and students have an excellent foundation on which their future and that of the nation is secured. The administration and management of the Laventille Schools by the ministry of education is unacceptable. Minister Gopeesingh must intervene as soon as possible.

Laventille Girls, Laventille Boys, Our Lady of Laventille,L’escallier and St Phillips Primary Schools, as well as other schools in Laventille are in a state of disrepair. Upgrades have been identified to the Ministry of Education, yet these have not been successfully completed and are posing a threat to the quality of education delivered to these students. Incomplete repairs and timelines have not been developed and prevent students and staff from functioning in a quality educational environment.

Since the commencement of the 2010 academic year there has not been a term when all schools were ready for students and staff. I wish to draw to the attention of Minister Gopeesingh, the ministry of education and the UNC government that our nation is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on The Rights of the Child: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The Convention protects children's rights by standards in healthcare, education and legal, civil and social services. The minister has neglected, refused or is unwilling to protect the rights of the children of Laventille West to a quality education.
