Letter: Aquaculture and aquaponics in the Caribbean
Published on September 29, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

I am a partner in Featherhead Tech that was registered in 2008 in Ontario, Canada.

We are Indigenous First People from the Akwesasne First Nation. This Mohawk reserve extends into the borders of New York State in the United States and Ontario and Quebec in Canada.

Aquaponics is our direction and by definition of our people, being First People of North America, which includes the Caribbean.

We have visited Turks and Caicos last year and presented an aquaponic venture to them.

Today we want to extend our direction to all the island people that have no aquaculture or aquaponic operations in place.

Our direction is to partner with islanders and the governments that will allow self sustainable farming, which is needed on most of the Islands.

This farming allows fresh homegrown goods such as vegetables, herbs and fish that are grown at home.

This practice reduces the amount of land and water that conventional farmers use and takes pressure off declining fish species seen everywhere today.

The recession has more people turning to the waters to fish and aquaponics can reverse this to employment positions, where Featherhead Tech supports empowering women in the work force.

We hope you would find the need to help us in any way to make this come to light for many people that need fresh fish, veggies and employment on the islands.

You have my permission beforehand to forward this to any person or place that would be interested in helping us with our goals.

Jeffrey Arquette

Pam and James Greenewald:

We were surprised to see this as we just returned from Great Harbor Cay in the Bahamas where there was NO fresh vegetables and 60% of the people suffer from poor nutrition and diabetes! We also promote Aquaponics and education about it from our home base in Florida (near Gainesville). We decided we want to also travel around the isladns setting up Aquaponics systems and partnering with the Gov. and the island school. We connected with a Gov. school on the island who is very excited to start and we are putting together a "Request for materials" from our sources. We should partner up with each other!!!!! Please write to us so we can communicate better by email and phone. Our phone numbers are 352-359-0857 (James) and 352-359-1133 (Pam). Our website is www.livingwatersaquaponics.com.We are the Branch office for the North Fl. Aquaponics Assoc. Hope to hear from you soon, Pam
