Grenada MP hails new Venezuelan vice-president
Published on October 12, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada -- Former Grenada foreign minister, Peter David, is confident that Nicolas Maduro will perform excellently in the role of Venezuela’s new vice-president.

President Hugo Chavez, who was re-elected to another six-year term on Sunday, announced Maduro’s appointment to the number two position in government on Wednesday.

Maduro, a former bus driver who rose through the ranks of Chavez’s United Socialist Party, had been serving as Venezuela’s foreign minister since 2006.

“I had the privilege of being involved in many intensive working sessions with Mr. Maduro at regional and international meetings,” said David, MP for the Town of St George.

“Mr Maduro is an intelligent and detailed-oriented individual and I’m confident that he will do an excellent job as the vice president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. I congratulate him on his elevation to the vice presidency.”

Maduro, 49, has long been seen as one possible successor to Chavez, who has cancer. He would replace Chavez should his battle with cancer force him to step down in the future.

Chavez, who has been in power since 1999, will be sworn in in January for a fourth term.
