Grenada's immigration department scores high on the international scene
Published on May 14, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada -- Grenada’s immigration officials have good reason to be pleased as they enjoy their achievement as the second place winners of the 2012 United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) Programme.

In a letter to Grenada’s Chief Immigration and Passport Officer, Superintendent Godfrey Fleming, on May 7, 2012, director of the UN’s Division for Public Administration and Development Management, Haiyan Qian, congratulated the department on winning the second place among 400 entries.

Qian said: “Your institution’s outstanding achievement has demonstrated excellence in serving the public interest and I am confident it has made a significant contribution to the improvements of public administration in your country. Indeed, it will serve as an inspiration and encouragement for others working for public service.”

Fleming was quick to credit the achievement to the initiative of image management consultant and regional human resource development trainer Edward (Eddie) Frederick, for his voluntary contributions over the years in the area of regular customer service training and general motivation at a time when the department needed this training but had not the financial resources to pay for it.

He considers Frederick’s contributions pivotal to the department’s receipt of this award in light of the tremendously improved service attitudes and the performance of each immigration team member nationwide.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas on Thursday congratulated the Immigration and Passport Department for this performance on the international stage.

“This is an outstanding achievement for our Immigration Department. It is even more significant considering that this programme involved the entire 192 member states of the UN. I congratulate the department on this achievement, which should encourage all public officers to focus on improving the quality of service we provide to the community,” the prime minister said.

The UN Public Service Awards is an annual event, which promotes the role, professionalism and visibility of public service.

According to Haiyan Qian, “…..the award is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service and rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide.”

On June 23 each year, the United Nations organizes a ceremony to commemorate the United Nations Public Service Day, during which the most innovative initiatives in the public sector around the world are recognized.

Grenada is expected to be represented by Fleming, who was invited by the UNDESA director to attend, as the award is “particularly significant” and marks the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the United Nations Public Service Day and Awards Ceremony.

The Grenadian immigration chief reiterated his commitment to the delivery of the highest level of customer service, supported by the first class environs that they now operate in. He called on his team members to dedicate themselves to this new status they enjoy, as recognized internationally.
