NEW YORK, USA -- The Grenada consulate in New York is acting as a facilitator between Grenadians affected by Hurricane Sandy and local communities, putting in-need people in touch with resources.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, many New Yorkers, including Grenadian nationals, are without electrical power and water and are picking up the pieces from severe flooding.

Consul General Derrick James has been briefing some elected officials in New York City about the immediate needs of some of his nationals affected by Sandy.

James, who spent Wednesday assisting some Grenadians in parts of Southern Brooklyn with the clearing of debris, has also requested an emergency executive meeting of GRENCAP United, an umbrella grouping of Grenadian organisations in New York.

“We may not see on television the extent of damage to the communities where many of our nationals live but I can tell you it’s very devastating,” according to the consul general. “In some cases they have lost everything and will need a fresh start.”

The consulate has temporarily shifted operations from its Manhattan office to the community, working along with officers of GRENCAP in assisting those in need.

The hurricane, which came ashore on Monday, has claimed the lives of more than 35 people from New York, with billions of dollars in damage.
