Former Dominican Republic president appointed ACP 'Eminent Person'
Published on February 20, 2013 Email To Friend    Print Version

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Secretary-general of the African, Caribbean Pacific (ACP) Group of states, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, last week met with former president of the Dominican Republic, Dr Leonel Fernández Reyna, who confirmed his agreement to be one of the “Eminent Persons” called upon to analyse strategies and prospects for the future of the ACP Group.

This project for the development of the ACP Group within a new global structure was officially launched by its heads of state and government at their last summit held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, last December.

The meeting between Chambas and Fernandez took place in the margins of the Caribbean Regional Meeting of the ACP-European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly in Santo Domingo.

The main agenda items for the meeting were: the Cariforum-EU EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) and, more directly related to the Caribbean region itself, regional integration, natural disaster risk prevention, the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), trade in services, renewable energy initiatives and progress in rebuilding Haiti since the earthquake of 2010.
