Dominica's newest service club: the Rotary Club of Portsmouth
Published on July 7, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

PORTSMOUTH, Dominica -- The Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Dominica’s newest service club, has announced that, after just five months in operation, it is well on its way to starting several community service projects. With a growing membership and a strategic location in Portsmouth, the club is poised to make a difference in the northern half of Dominica.

Having been officially formed on February 2, 2012, the Rotary Club of Portsmouth is Dominica’s second Rotary Club. The Rotary club of Dominica (in Roseau) has been in existence since 1975 and has undertaken a multitude of projects and fundraising activities over the years. It is well known for the VOSH Missions, which through the years have provided eye tests and eyeglasses to persons throughout Dominica.

The Rotary Club of Portsmouth has been in the making for some time. Finally, in 2011, the ideas and discussions came to fruition when three members -- Daniel Hopkins, Lise van de Kamp and Hans Schilders -- of the Rotary Club of Dominica decided to form a club in Portsmouth.

These three members met with four other individuals to finalise the club’s constitution and by-laws. The club’s popularity spread, and soon several individuals became new club members. The Club’s aim, like all other Rotary Clubs, is to provide humanitarian service, to encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Weekly meetings are held and all relevant committees have been established. The Club is now commencing plans to undertake its first projects, along with the necessary fundraising activity. The Club looks forward to welcoming individuals as prospective members or friends of Rotary International.
