Commentary: The gaming issue in Bermuda - Part 2
Published on December 28, 2013 Email To Friend    Print Version

By Senator Marc Daniels

Good day, Bermuda, today I will conclude my take on the OBA taking away your democratic rights.

Senator Marc Daniels is a well known Bermudian lawyer, educated in Bermuda, Canada and the United Kingdom. mdaniels@charterchambers.bm
A private citizen said on the radio that, if the wording of the referendum question was not adjusted, many Bermudians might boycott voting as an indictment on the OBA for trying to dupe them.

Many others in the community, including the PLP, have called for a neutral question on the referendum.

I know we have our political lenses on but please try and take them off as we think critically over the evidence before us as reported in the newspapers, online media and parliamentary transcripts.

Lack of Credibility

As a first time senator, I am new to politics, yet the actions that I observe of the OBA really disturb me. I have lost complete trust in individuals that I once admired.

I certainly regret coming to support the premier publicly, when I know that only one member from his caucus even commented on that image of him on his knees, only after I put a post on Facebook.

I am simply turned off by the rhetoric of "change", "doing politics differently" and all the other catch phrases that appear meaningless. It's becoming clear that all of this rhetoric is a fraud.

The OBA cannot claim any legitimacy in seeking to be "collaborative," when these types of tactics are used.

In government, there is a concept called collective responsibility. Of course a photo can be interpreted and misinterpreted, but the faces of some OBA politicians at the press conference did not look too comfortable with the announcement.

Remember each OBA MP promised their voters a referendum. Now they each look quite dishonest to their voters.

A Time for Truth

We need leadership; we need courage, and a willingness to disagree. But more importantly we need truth. I have little respect for the government for what I consider to be bold faced lies about our party leader and my friend.

As one individual, I know the OBA does not care about my thoughts. Yet I will fight for the beliefs of my fellow Bermudians of this beautiful island.

The OBA needs to be honest and stop taking Bermudians for fools.

Yes, we all want jobs for Bermudians but the OBA cannot show us how all of a sudden these hotel jobs will be occupied by Bermudians as:

• Waiters
• Chefs,
• Maitre'd,
• Croupiers
• Casino pit bosses.

They should not merely say this is about creating jobs for Bermudians when for the last two decades or more, demonstrate that Bermudians have not been taking up these opportunities in the hotel industry.

We all know the UBP cabinet is back. Since not one of them has said that their previous vision under the UBP was misguided and are on a different course, they should stop pretending that the same UBP tactics are still not at play, when the majority support base and funding remain the same.

Standing Strong

Fellow Bermudians, this issue has increased my resolve to stand for your democratic rights to exercise your voice on this gaming issue via referendum.

The OBA is “standing on” your democratic rights. We of the PLP will forever “stand for” your democratic rights.
