Commentary: The Republicans still control the House and this is a major problem for us
Published on December 1, 2012 Email To Friend    Print Version

By Wellington C. Ramos

Two years ago the Republican Party regained control of the House of Representatives by a margin of about 41 seats in the 112th Congress. Broken down by political parties, it is 241 Republicans to 193 Democrats. The Democrats gained about seven seats in the election held in November 2012. The makeup of the 113th House of Representatives will be 234 Republicans to 200 Democrats.

When they assumed power, they made it clear that they were not interested in doing anything about the economy to revitalize it and provide jobs for our people but to get President Obama out of the White House. Every proposal President Obama sent to the Republican House they rejected. Some job proposals were not even brought up in their committees that they control for a debate. This led to our economy remaining stagnated and our people unemployed for two years or more.

The Republicans were able to win the governorships in about 33 states and control the state legislators in all, plus some of the other states that had Democratic governors. In every state the Republicans controlled, their political philosophy was the same at the federal and state level. Issues such as tax cuts for the rich, denying Americans social benefits, getting rid of collective bargaining, cutting entitlement programs, eradicating gun control, restricting abortion, eradicating unions, eliminating desperately needed programs, making state immigration laws against foreigners to deny them of any rights in the states where they live and redistricting, gerrymandering of political districts to maintain political control.

Democrats did not react to these Republicans and President Obama was mostly focusing on his re-election and not removing them from the House of Representatives. Now, it seems to me as if they are coming back to Washington D.C. with the same attitude. I heard many of the Republicans saying that President Obama does not have a mandate from the American people because they still control the House of Representatives and they are going to use their influence to stop anything he wants to put through.

In the United States they will use a filibuster to block legislation they disagree with and to kill any nomination President Obama chooses to send to them if they do not like the nominee. Well, if this is what they are planning to do we are going to witness a hot summer come 2013 because we as Americans will not go through this crisis next year.

I now call on President Barack Obama to start mobilizing the American people against all these Republicans who do not like him. He does not need any more convincing to come to the conclusion that they are working towards seeing him fail as our president. I am of the strong opinion that from the time President Barack Obama won the presidency, a group of white people got together and said, “We allowed this one to get away but we must put things in place not to let this happen again.”

How unrealistic could these haters be when Article 14 of the United States Constitution, which they wrote, clearly states that all citizens of this country must be entitled to equal opportunities and protection under the laws as citizens of this great country despite their race, creed, colour or religion?

If they want to change this then they must go and change the constitution. America has a black president now and from there we will move to a woman and then a Hispanic and then Asian and then anybody else. Why? Because the people of the United States have the right to decide who they want to elect as our president and not just a few people but all the people.

The Democratic Party must now start planning to find candidates to vote out all those Republicans in the year 2014 when all of them will be up for re-election.

We are in danger for every day they spend in the House of Representatives. Two years is a long time to wait for anything. In the last two years, with their obstructionist tactics, they have made life difficult for many of our fellow Americans. President Barack Obama we have elected you to lead and not the Republicans to continue disrespecting you.

Use all the executive powers available to you in the US Constitution to address our needs, whether they like it or not. If that does not work call us to Washington D.C. to stand up in front of the House of Representatives so that they could see who are the real people in America that they are supposed to represent.

Republican Conservative:

Yes those evil Republicans control the HR and it's a good thing. Someone has to stop those liberal tax & spend Democrats. You know, the one who is going to run the USA into the ground, with his anti business, anti wealthy, anti conservatives, pro spending, pro give away attitude. I get so tired listening to this kind or talk from all those liberals who want to blame all their woes on Republicans. You all need realize your methods do not work.
