DHAKA, Bangladesh – Tino Best lived up to his surname, bowling West Indies to a sensational, come-from-behind, 77-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test on Saturday here.

Before a weekend crowd of more than 15,000, the lion-hearted Windies fast bowler captured a career-best 5-24 from 12.3 overs of sustained pace and hostility, shattering Bangladesh’s dreams of a rare Test victory, as they were bowled out for 167 on the final day.

Gaining uneven bounce and a bit of movement from the hard, easy-paced Sher-e-Bangla Stadium pitch, the 31-year-old Best claimed five wickets in a Test for the time in his 17 Tests spread over more than a decade.

He formalised the victory and fiver, when he bowled Mahmudullah for a painstaking 29 with a well-pitched delivery, the third of a fourth spell from the Media Centre End on the northern side of the ground.

Best celebrated with a typical dash across the outfield and sank into the embrace of fellow fast bowler Ravi Rampaul at third-man.

The result gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series, which continues on Wednesday at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in the south-western city of Khulna.

West Indies had offered little resistance and were bowled out for 273 in their second innings inside the first hour with Test newcomer, off-spinner Sohag Gazi ending with 6-74 from 23.2 overs – the best figures from a Bangladesh bowler on debut.

Ravi Rampaul gave the Windies an early breakthrough, when he had the unusually sedate Tamim Iqbal caught behind for five in the fifth over, flashing at a delivery outside the off-stump.

Best gave the Caribbean side a grip, when Junaid Siddique, another left-hander, was also caught behind for 20, nibbling at a delivery going across him, as Bangladesh reached 46 for two at lunch.

After the interval, Best pulled the choke in an inspired spell to tip the balance in favour of the West Indies, as the Bangladesh batsmen crumbled under the pressure.

He psyched out Shahriar Nafees with typical banter before holding onto a return catch, when the batsman miscued a hook shot at a short, rising delivery. The Bangladesh left-hander made 23.

Best swung the match decisively, when he had Shakib Al Hasan caught behind for two with the perfect delivery that moved across the World-rated Bangladesh left-handed all-rounder, sinking the home team to 55 for four.

West Indies were made to work, when Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim came to the crease and spent close to 45 minutes, stemming the fall of wickets.

Best trapped the jockey-sized wicketkeeper/batsman lbw for 16 plumb in front with a perfectly-pitched delivery that moved back from outside the off-stump.

Windies captain Darren Sammy belatedly introduced left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and the Test newcomer’s impact was immediate. He trapped first innings century-maker Naeem Islam lbw for 16 and bowled Nasir Hossain 21, as Bangladesh slumped to 129 for seven at tea.

After the break, West Indies vigourously pursued the last three wickets, but Sohag stoutly resisted for close to an hour, frustrating the visitors’ bowlers.

Permaul had Sohag caught at deep mid-off for 19 by substitute fielder and compatriot Narsingh Deonarine, on the field for the ill Chanderpaul, and Rampaul brought West Indies closer when Shahadat Hossain was caught at forward short leg for four before Best wrapped up the innings.

Permaul finished with 3-32 from eight overs and Rampaul claimed 2-32 from 11 overs.

This is West Indies’ third full tour of Bangladesh, where they have never lost a Test series, let alone a Test.
