BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (BGIS) -- Barbados and China have pledged to strengthen the already good relations that exist between the two countries. Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Christopher Sinckler, and Chinese Ambassador, Xu Hong, gave this assurance during a meeting at Government Headquarters recently.

Sinckler emphasised that government was committed to the One China Policy and praised the collaboration with the Asian giant on a number of substantial projects such as expansion at the Barbados Community College and the construction of the Cheapside Public Market.

"I want to take this opportunity as the leader of the Ministry of Finance, to thank the government and people of China, for their continued support and development assistance to Barbados. We cherish those relations and we remain committed as a people and a government to the One China Policy, and that has guided our policy since the 1970's when we established diplomatic relations with China," he added.

In turn, Hong also praised the long-standing relationship with the country and expressed the hope for an even closer working relationship on new projects.

"...We can cooperate in other areas such as climate change, the development of renewable energy and we also want to encourage Chinese enterprises to come to Barbados and invest. If there is an idea that the country wants to explore, China is willing to provide the assistance because we see this as a very important aspect of our diplomatic relations," he underlined.

Barbados and China established diplomatic ties on May 30, 1977.
